About the Course

 

The wound management course is designed for Registered Nurses, Registered Paramedics Registered Physiotherapists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and health care professionals who require additional skills in wound closure, or those who require to update and refresh their wound closure skills.

 

The course is also open to NHS IHCD Ambulance Technicians (or equivalent) & Class 1 Combat Medical Technicians who have maintained their clinical qualifications and who are working under a medical officer with the support of their clinical lead. The course is also open to off-shore medics who require wound closure skills.

Non-health care professionals who have an interest in wound closure such as those working in sports environments may attend for the steri-strip and skin adhesive phase. However, Non health professionals  (except for CMT 1 & Off-Shore Medics) will not be able to undertake the stapling and suturing phase of the course.

 

The course is delivered over a single training day from 0900hrs through to 1600hrs

Course details

 

The management of open wounds is one of the most common skills required by healthcare professionals working in the primary care, or the emergency medical care settings.

This course is aimed at developing the wound care skills of healthcare professionals ensuring a safe working practice is undertaken pre-hospitally and will cover wound management including when to refer onward..

Purpose of the course

 

The wound management and suturing course will develop individual health care professionals assessment, care and management of wounds where you will be teach taught basic Paper Suture (Steri-Strip), Skin Glue and Suturing techniques appropriate for healthcare professionals such as Nurses, Paramedics and Advanced Clinical Practitioners..

Who is eligible to attend

 

Full Course -

  • Registered Nurses,

  • Registered Paramedics,

  • Registered Physiotherapists 

  • Advanced Clinical Practitioners

  • Health Professional responsible for the management of wounds.

  • HM Forces Class 1 Combat Medical Technicians. Those who have left and are working in approved medical settings working under medical officers may also be eligible provided you are supported by your medical officer / senior clinical lead).

  • NHS IHCD Ambulance Technicians (Must have the support of their clinical leads in order to complete the post classroom clinical competency hospital based phase as this section is arranged locally by the course candidates following the classroom course phase)

  • Those working as Tier 1 Medics working in Hostile or Remote environment settings provided you have the required clinical background which you can evidence together with the ability to be supported through clinical placements to undertake the requirements of the supervised clinical placement aspect. 

  • Off-Shore Medics who require wound closure skills as part of their role.

Non Suturing Element -

  • Individuals working with sports organisations and other non-health professionals who have an interest in wound management / wound closure.

 

Duration

 

Courses are run over one day (7 hours) at one of our training venues in South Wales.

       

Course content

  • Develops basic wound assessment techniques.

  • Provides the knowledge required to identify serious and minor wounds.

  • Provides skills required to identify wounds which are appropriate for closure ‘in the pre-hospital / minor injuries setting and those which are not.

  • Provides skills required to identify wounds requiring referral onwards for specialist treatment.

  • Teaches the appropriate selection of sutures, needles and equipment

  • Identifies safety issues

  • Provides the skills to correctly prepare and suture simple wounds.

  • Offers alternative wound closure techniques which include paper sutures (steri-strips), skin glue staples and sutures.

  • Correct anti microbial therapy when dealing with wound closure

  • Identifies how to implement correct follow-up and referral procedures

  • Provides continual professional development

Course cost:

 

£80.00 per person

 

£70.00 per person for Members of the College of Paramedics, RCN & the GMB Union. (Proof of membership is required).
